Walmart Memo

Walmart has been feeling the pressure of the raise in health care costs, as most companies have. Walmart had about a 14% increase in revenue last quarter (approx. $64 Billion), and I can really see why they are concerned with there health care costs. Walmart is suggesting that they should look into hiring people that are younger and in better health to keep these costs down.

It does kindof make sense right away to hire healthy workers, however the repercussions can be harmful. Think about how it would affect our overall society if only the healthy were employed. We would have overweight people on the streets begging for food. We would have chain smokers robbing convenience stores to get there cigarettes. In most of the companies that I've worked for, you have plenty of overweight, smokers, alcoholics and unhealthy eaters, they still need jobs and if a company feels that they are not worthy of stocking shelves, what will they do. Walmart only starts there employees out at minimum wage, and in most cities, that doesn't even cover there bills. To cut or selectively offer health care would just be unfair. How much profit does a company need to make before they care about who is really doing the work to bring in those profits.
